Joydeep Chaudhuri
India2019: One of my most favorite photograph! The photographer is Joydeep Chaudhuri … my mentor.
I have been waiting for this print for more than 14 years. I guess he had decided that he would give it to me in person at his home. Finally got the print and spent a fantastic evening at his beautiful and serene home with my family. Also, learnt many things new about photography.
The story behind this photograph is very interesting. This monkey actually came to charge at him. Instead of running away, he waited until the monkey came very close to him. What is even more interesting is that it was not shot with any tele lens. It was clicked with a KIT lens. Yes, you read it right, a kit lens! There is a famous mantra that every senior photographer shares with their juniors which is that one has to go to as close as possible to one’s subject. In this case, the subject charged at him but despite the risk of getting mauled by an angry monkey, he stood his ground and calmly clicked this photograph.
Thank you Joy’da! My collection of prints is enriched again…
This photograph actually reminds me always that we photographers actually take many risks [although not intentionally to harm anyone including ourself] for a photograph. Every photographer has such stories behind each of their best photograph and if you don’t know them personally, you may think they are untrue.
