5 TIPS FOR BEGINNERS TO CLICK STUNNING LANDSCAPES
Landscape photography is all about space and dimension, timing and colors, a pure portrayal of nature in its magnificent glory. To many, this genre of photography may seem very easy to do. However, reality is completely different. This is one of the most difficult genres of photography as the photographer not only needs to ensure that he/she is present at the right moment and at the right place, but also needs to possess high end photographic gear and have fantastic technical knowledge to get a great shot.
Here are some tips that will help you get started.

1.LENS: A wide angle lens is a MUST HAVE lens for landscape photography & 16-35mm f/2.8 is the most popular among landscape photographers. But the problem is that this lens is quite an expensive one for beginners. So, the easiest way out is third party lens like Tokina 11-16mm or 12-24mm if you have APS-C or crop body & a 16-35mm f/4 is also fantastic if you have a full frame body.
2.FILTER: Do not forget to invest in a good CPL (Circular Polarizer) & ND (Neutral Density) filters. The CPL will help us capture the beautiful blue color of the sky, dramatic clouds and avoid any unwanted glare/reflection in your frame. The ND filter on the other hand will help us to get a balanced exposure where the brightness between the land & sky is not similar. It also helps us to capture motion so we can capture a smooth flow of water when photographing a seascape or a waterfall. Please remember, the sky [*] needs extra attention in Landscape Photography. A white or dull sky can spoil an image totally!

3.EXPOSURE [**]: We need to choose a smaller aperture to get a greater depth of field (DoF) for a vast landscape like f/16 or f/22 where we need to set slower shutter speeds to capture some movements in landscapes like the water at a waterfall. Also a common question is where to focus. The focusing point should ideally lie somewhere around 1/3rd of the image from the foreground.
Timing is another important point to consider in landscape photography. You will find professional photographers spending days at a particular spot waiting for the perfect light. Also, most landscape photographers are early risers because the early morning light is the most suitable for landscape photography. Consider the Twilight [***] as a golden opportunity.
Lastly, Shoot in RAW because that will allow us to edit the image later with minimum loss of quality.

4.TRIPOD: Using a slow shutter speed is very common among landscape photographers. We need to set slower shutter speeds to accommodate a smaller aperture & that’s why we need a steady tripod [****] to avoid camera shake. Do not forget to switch off IS or VR when your camera is mounted on a tripod. Use your remote to release the shutter and ensure further stability in your shot. If you do not have a remote, you can use a self-timer if the scene permits you.

5.COMPOSITION: The 1st thing to remember while framing an image in landscape photography is the Rule of Thirds. Apart from that, the foreground needs our attention. We need a point of interest in the foreground that will guide a viewer’s path of viewing into the frame & create a sense of depth.
With these 5 simple tips and a love for the outdoors, start your journey into landscape photography now. Happy clicking! |
