Won 1st Prize in Street Photography Contest organized by Indian Visual Art Foundation (http://ivaf.info/salonivaf3/index.php). There is a Cash Prize for this win!
This is my 200th win for this photograph. Probably one of my best shot!
It gave me some of big prizes… few more cash awards, a DJI Mavic 2 Pro Drone, lots of salon medals including few prestigious FIAP Gold!
I have seen few photographers tried to take similar shots inspired by this one. Always feel happy whenever I see this photograph in print or on some website!
Here is the story behind this photograph!
It was taken in March 2013 at our Hyderabad Home where we were staying in 1st Floor. This boy threw the paper to our balcony and my job was to collect it as soon as possible before my dogs started reading it. It was their favorite morning excerse to tear the news paper into pieces and then pee on it!
One fine morning the boy was little late and I was waiting for my newspapers. I saw how he throw it. I woke up next day with the camera & saw he has already delievered it. It took me more than a week to find out his timing! I have noticed that he comes everyday between exactly 6:40 to 6:45am. I have also noticed that he is very fast. It didn’t take him more than 10 secconds to park his cycle, bring out two news papers from his cycle carrier & to throw to our balcony!
Now I was ready. It was just a challenge for to take the shot for fun. Just like a fun project. Because the most difficult part of this shot was waking up myself. I am always a late sleeper. I usually go to sleep by 4am. Waking up at 6:30 is the most difficult part of this shoot.
Also, no way I could stage this shot! The main problem was to talk to him. I didn’t know Telugu (Language) that time! So, it is a perfect candid shot!
I couldn’t manage the shot in first 3days. He was out of focus first day, cycle was not in the frame next day & third day, the paper was not in the frame. However, I managed this one on the 5th day!
I have given him only INR.20/- & the copy of a photo when it was published in Deccan Chronicle-Hyderabad for the first time. I didn’t know it will be the most appreciated shot of mine. I will definitely want to meet him when I go next time Hyderabad & this cash award is for him! I know, the boy become a teen now. May be I will take him to restaurant this time. Really thankful to him.
This photograph is very special for all the kids who delieverd the “news” at last mile. Without whome this NewsPapers business may not be successful. They helped us to start our day. They delieverd the news whatever the weather is, rain or winter! |
