Udayan had waited a long time for his order to arrive and he was getting as restless as he was hungry. Looking around, he saw the restaurant was filled with chattering families, lots of laughter, groups of gregarious youngsters and bustling waiters. In a corner, through the glass door, he saw this lonely man standing guard at the entrance. It was as if the glass door created a huge gulf between the guard outside and the merry crowd inside. Worlds kept apart by merely a piece of glass!

Driving through hills on dirt roads, Udayan reached a small tribal hamlet deeply nestled somewhere between Araku and the Orissa border. He saw a few structures where grains were stored, some chickens, some goats, two rows of thatched dwellings, a few old women and children. The kids were very shy and ran away as soon as he tried to approach them, yet came back to see the car he was travelling in. He handed them a bar of chocolate. They were delighted. This little girl in the image caught his particular attention because she was very wary. She kept her distance from both the car and Udayan, yet never letting him go out of her sight, lightly hopping behind some cover with her little brother wedged on her hips as soon as he turned to look.
1️⃣Accepted in iPAE2006 Salon (Butterfly Art Foundation International Photo-Art Exhibition) & published in their catalogue. It was included in their online campaign & online Gallery (baf.in & bafindia.org) in 2006 for which Udayan received a Hon.MBAF title. *** Kulasai Dasara is the grand festival of 300 year old Kulasai Mutharammam Temple which is located at Kulasekharapatnam in Tamil Nadu. In essence, Dasara is celebrated in the 10th day after 9-day of Navaratri festival across India. However, at Kulasai, it is celebrated as a 12-days function. It is estimated that around 2.5 Million [25Lakhs] devotees visited the temple in the 2018 celebrations.
Teams are formed from each village and are sponsored by the richest family of the village or the village head. One member from this team is chosen to don the avatar of Goddess Kali, the central god in this festival. A strict condition is that only a man can dress as Kali and has to fast for 41 days. Other members dress up like other Gods or Goddesses according to their choice. During Dasara, these devotees need to dress like the god/goddess every day and have to abstain from impure thoughts and bad habits. They need to commit to being pure in body, mind and soul.
Kulasekharapatnam is a tiny coastal town with extremely high humidity and temperature. In this climate, it’s not an easy commitment to be dressed as a god in heavy costume and with bold makeup. If this was not hard enough, they fast for 41 days and carry a pot of fire in their bare hands, wear multiple weighty false arms and a pair of metal glasses with a tiny hole limiting their vision to almost zero and are surrounded by people playing drums and loud music.
I have seen some of these avatars faint out of exhaustion, heat, the frenzy around them and dehydration.
Each team roams around many villages during Dasara and perform a ritualistic dance to earn some alms. As it is quite a lucrative way of earning money, some individuals, especially kids, also dressed in godly costumes to make some easy money.
During the last day of the festival, the celebrations peak. The avatars visit the temple and on the last leg of their journey through the temple corridor, they perform a ritualistic dance in devotion to the God. To depict the anger with which Goddess Lalithambigai destroyed Magisasuran, they enter a trance like state characterized by deafening music and violent dancing.
After they have offered their prayers, they then finally go the beach behind the temple and worship the fire that they have carried in their hands. A cleansing dip follows where they take a bath and immerse all the godly belongings which made them look like God. Local kids then have fun collecting these godly avatars to play with them or keep them as a memory.
An interesting thing however is that taking a dip in the sea with all the heavy costume is a practical problem as water makes everything seem heavier. So they just stand in the sea and spray some sea water on themselves symbolically and take off their costumes post that.
Millions of visitors come to attend this event. Sometimes an entire village arrives by buses or in trucks. They pitch their tents in open grounds for three days making it look like a mini picnic complete with cooking facilities.
Local residents are also very helpful towards these visitors. They allow them to take shelter in their homes. Some families even offer water and food to these visitors.
The final day looks like a colourful carnival where thousands of teams line up in a narrow lane marching towards the temple for hours often stretching day into night. It is life-time experience to witness the event and feel their faith & dedication. |

Meet my 48 day old son, Ujan Atig Pal (UjanAtigPal.com) who does not know what to do with his two hands. So he plays with them by himself & makes new poses always. He had to stay in an ICU at a hospital as he was a premature baby born at 29 weeks. Doctors said that usually night shifts were boring as they did not have much work to do. However during the 37 nights that Atig stayed there, each night was memorable & not boring as they used to spend their time with him and see his new poses with his hands always. This time too he was posing in a new manner with two hands on his face and a naughty smile. I could not resist myself from taking this candid shot! By the way, he is a really tiny baby. You cannot probably guess how tiny he really is from this pic as I have digitally zoomed in to show his mischievous smile.

The impressive arches of the Golkonda Fort, symmetrical and graceful, leads you into a complex labyrinth of rooms, stairways, corridors and open yards, each shrouded in layers of history. Mosques, ladies rooms, public conference rooms, war rooms, market places, this place was obviously a hub of activity in years past. Thronged by tourists, the fort has survived the ravages of time and still holds its place as a hub of activity in modern times. While one tourist was mesmerized with the architecture of the Fort, the others were off to explore more.

A mega city, a celluloid haven, an economic powerhouse, Mumbai is a city of sharp contrasts. The city will charm and frustrate you in equal measure. Once can live cheap as well as live a life of luxury here. Mumbai accommodates all. These local kids were selling balloons in the evening to earn some pocket money at the popular Chowpatty Beach, with the Nariman Point business district in the distance. The playful kids however could not contain their excitement about the dream-like sunset and pleasant cool evening. Udayan captured them having fun at work!

Fort Kochi is a small port town that grew into a major tourist destination known most for its old colonial style buildings, and its diverse houses of worship. A melting pot of many cultures, religions, faith and professions, Udayan clicked this little slice of life at Fort Kochi from the time he spent there.

Udayan would have almost missed this man had he not called out to him urging him to buy something from the shop. The avenue was a shopping haven and the profusion of shops made for a very entertaining experience. With so many shops vying for the customers attention, it was a matter of who stood out amongst the rest in terms of being the brightest, biggest, posh-est, most decorative, cheapest, etc. Yet this spunky man, nondescriptly camouflaged amongst the mannequins, caught Udayans attention because he could not resist the lure of a “model” jump at him. He was compelled to buy some clothes at this shop impressed with their marketing strategy. This guards objective was to attract customers and he did that well indeed!
